Easy DIY Homemade Cheez-it cracker recipe

Is anyone else on a journey to reduce the amount of preservatives and unnecessary additives in their food? Let's be honest, I'll never be perfect, I like Coke 🥤 and eating out too much, but we really have been trying to alter when we can. I've been exploring healthier homemade options lately, and it's surprisingly not as difficult as it seems. Today, I'm excited to share a recipe for delicious homemade cheese crackers. They make a great alternative to store-bought snacks like Cheez-Its or Goldfish. Not only do my kids love them, but I find them even more flavorful. Plus, they're incredibly easy to make, especially when you have some downtime to watch TV or multitask.

I'm going to share this recipe in a way that makes sense to my brain! I hate going back and forth to see how much I need of something. So keep that in mind when you are reading the recipe.

Alright, let's dive in because I can assure you that once you taste these, you won't want to settle for anything else!

Ingredients:

8 ounces of desired cheese flavor, shredded

1/4 cup of unsalted butter, softened

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup all purpose flour

2 - 3 tablespoons of cold water

Instructions:

  1. In your stand mixer, with a paddle attachment, mix 8 ounces of shredded cheese, 1/4 cup of softened unsalted butter, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix on low speed until fully blended.

  2. Once fully mixed, gradually add 1 cup of flour until the mixture becomes crumbly.

  3. Slowly add 2-3 tablespoons of cold water, mixing until a ball of dough forms.

  4. Once you have formed a dough ball, hand knead it into a disc and wrap in plastic. Place in fridge for an hour.

  5. After 1 hour, preheat oven to 375 degrees.

  6. Break the dough disc in half and roll out the cheese dough. Roll it thin and use a pastry cutter to cut it into your desired shapes. Place the shapes on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Keep in mind that they will rise in the oven, so aim to roll them out to just a little thicker than a quarter.

  7. Before popping them into the oven, poke a dot in the middle so they don't rise too high!

  8. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until fully puffed and slightly browned at the edges. Remove from the oven and cool on wire racks. While they can be stored in a container for up to a week, they are so delicious they are likely to be eaten long before then!

This is the easiest recipe and your kids will LOVE making it and then eating them. My kids cannot wait for the next batch and it has easily become a staple in our weekly baking. We have been experimenting with different cheeses, but so far cheddar is still our favorite.

If you make these let me know how they turn out in the comments!
